SCA produces and sells renewable products that can replace fossil-based alternatives and thereby contribute to reducing global warming. SCA also contributes to climate benefit through the net growth of the company’s forests, which capture CO2 from the atmosphere, and by continuously striving to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its own value chain.

Fossil-free world

SCA’s operations are climate positive and contribute in several ways towards important climate solutions and a fossil-free world.

The forest as a carbon dioxide sink
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. The forest and its products are an important part of the solution. SCA manages its forests responsible to grow in the best possible way. As trees grow, they bind carbon dioxide. Trees are highly efficient carbon traps.

Renewable products
Our products, based on renewable raw material from responsibly managed forests, are recyclable and can replace fossil-based alternatives such as plastics and fossil fuels. With our products' low carbon footprint, we contribute to lower carbon footprint for our customers and customers' customers.

Fossil-free value chain
The overall aim is that SCA’s value chain is to become fossil-free. SCA’s own industrial processes are 95 percent fossil-free thanks to the bioenergy from our own forest raw materials. Better planning of transportation and by replacing fossil fuels, we reduce carbon dioxide emissions per tonne produced.

Renewable energy
SCA is now one of Europe’s largest producers of forest-based bioenergy, with a total production of about 11.9 TWh per year. In Sweden, SCA has three pellets factories and we leases out forest land for wind power production. SCA also develops products for the next-generation of biofuels and green chemicals.

SCA’s climate benefits
SCA’s climate benefits amount to 9.6 million tonnes of CO2 per annum, which is more than the total emissions from all the truck traffic and domestic air travel in Sweden. Look at our calculation model.

The green cycle is necessary for a fossil-free society
SCA's growing forest and renewable products mean that we can leave fossil carbon in the ground. Here we describe how SCA's industrial ecosystem effectively contributes.

Sustainability targets
SCA Group's sustainability targets will be achieved by 2030 with 2019 as the base year. The targets presented are those we consider to be most relevant for SCA’s business operations and stakeholders.

What we do!
SCA has a long-term perspective and takes responsibility for sustainable development throughout our business. See our good examples and activities that show how sustainability is part of SCA's business concept.

Our contribution to a fossil-free world

SCA’s pellets production corresponds to the energy consumption of over 60,000 households in the EU each year

The average EU household uses 24,074.1 kWh per year (source Eurostat 2017). SCA’s pellets production amounts to 1,445,500,000 kWh per year.

Wind power production on SCA’s land corresponds to the average energy consumption of over 117,000 individuals in the EU

Wind power production on SCA’s land totals 4.4 TWh. The average EU citizen uses 37,298.2 kWh per year (as of 2015). Production therefore corresponds to the consumption of more than 117,000 individuals. Source: Our World in Data, University of Oxford.

SCA’s goal for wind power production is 11 TWh, equivalent to the electrification of all passenger cars in Sweden

Wind power production for 2019 was 4.4 TWh. The goal of 11 TWh applies for the year 2025.

Renewable products

Each year, SCA’s pulp and paper products replace fossil materials, such as plastic, preventing CO2- emissions equivalent to the consumption of 400,000 individuals
